The shadow of a dead tree stub out in in a peat/black spruce bog. These are hellish places to be in the summer. Every step goes up to knee deep in spongy moss, sapping away your energy like walking forever in pillows. The moss holds water, so you also can't walk in them without getting your feet wet. However, in the winter, they make fantastic places to snowshoe once they get a few feet of snow on them. Nice and open without much brush!

Also, walking on them too much probably damages them. They seem somewhat fragile environments, and are prone to turning into bottomless mires if walked on too much by animals or humans, as the network of plants on top is broken down, and there is no longer a floating mass to walk on. However, in the winter, they are safe under the snow, and are even, as I said, the best route available in many places.
